Bobby Bones admitted that he "cheated" on Dancing With the Stars before he won the competition show during season 27 in 2018.

"I cheated, in the way of, they give you a limited amount of time with your partner. Like, four hours a day, they say," Bones, 45, explained while appearing on the Monday, September 15, episode of Jason Tartick's "Trading Secrets" podcast.

He added that he and his partner, Sharna Burgess, "would do [their] four" hours of rehearsal a day, but he made sure to keep practicing when he was alone. "I would record the session and then go by myself and rent a studio myself and train myself," Bones explained. "Like, illegally spent time over … because I was so far behind everybody else."

Bones said he "never danced" before the show and felt like a "fish out of water" when he joined the cast. He also admitted to being "just as surprised as anybody" else when he and Burgess, 40, ended up winning the season.

Bones received lower scores than the other three finalists, Milo Manheim, Evanna Lynch and Alexis Ren, throughout the season, though he managed to take home the mirrorball trophy thanks to his supportive fans that voted for him. In light of his lower scores, many DWTS fans were upset that he ended up winning the season.

"I wasn't in any way polarizing on the show, other than I sucked," he continued. "I didn't run out and [say], like, 'I'm the best.' I tried as hard as I could and I got sevens, a couple sixes. A couple eights."

He went on to acknowledge that his win was controversial among "a small section of hardcore fans," though he now knows they "never" would have been supportive of him anyway.

"The fact that I was winning made it difficult on people who had always watched the show. … I was anxious as crap every week, nervous," he said. "Because again, I'm a fish out of water doing that."
