LOS ANGELES — A massive fire erupted on Oct. 2 at an oil refinery in Southern California, officials said, prompting a large response by emergency crews and producing giant flames visible across the Los Angeles basin.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office confirmed that a fire erupted at an oil refinery in El Segundo, located about 20 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. Newsom was briefed on the incident, the office confirmed.
"Our office is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety," the governor's office said on X, advising residents to listen to local authorities.
The El Segundo facility, built in 1911, is the largest producing oil refinery on the West Coast, according to Chevron. The refinery processes more than 276,000 barrels of crude per day.
