Carolyn Bessette Kennedy was a poster child of ‘90s minimalism, and her pared-back style continues to inspire new generations.

While her relationship with husband John F. Kennedy Jr. pushed her into the spotlight, the former Calvin Klein publicist didn’t give media interviews.

Besides accounts from her friends and family—and shows like FX’s Love Story—photographs have helped preserve the memory of the singular fashion icon.

Carolyn Bessette Kennedy was a private person who found herself in the spotlight due to her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr.

The quietly influential Calvin Klein publicist met JFK Jr., son of late President John F. Kennedy, in the spring of 1992. They got engaged three years later, and married in a miraculously private ceremony on Georgia’s Cumberland Island in 1996.

Being the wife of a Kennedy—and a burgeoning It girl with a distinctive minimalist sense of style—drew more and more attention to Carolyn. Nevertheless, she avoided press interviews. She didn’t write a tell-all or launch a clothing line. Carolyn fought to maintain a life out of the public eye, even when media scrutiny and relentless fanfare made it difficult.

More than 25 years after she, her husband, and sister died in a 1999 plane crash, the FX biographical drama Love Story returned Carolyn to the spotlight. Her fashion became the cool girl blueprint once more, and her relationship and life were endlessly examined in essays, TikToks, and interviews with those who knew her. Without her words to refer back to, it’s the images of the late fashion icon that speak volumes.

Ahead, revisit 20 rarely seen photos of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, from photo ops at events to casual candids that capture the essence of her singular style.
