From OpenAI to Google, India hosts global AI summit

NEW DELHI, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Top executives from global AI giants will join several world leaders in New Delhi this week for a major artificial intelligence summit, at a time when India is ‌trying to lure more investment in the industry.

The country is emerging as a hotspot for AI firms, with ‌Alphabet's Google,Microsoftand Amazon already committing a combined $68 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure investment up to 2030.

Indian officials are positioning the India AI ​Impact Summit, which started on Monday, as a platform to amplify the voices of developing nations in global AI governance. Delhi marks the first time the global event is being held in the developing world.

"The theme of the summit is ... welfare for all, happiness for all, reflecting our shared commitment to harnessingArtificial Intelligencefor human-centric progress," India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X.

Key speakers at ‌the summit include Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, ⁠OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani, and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis who will address the event on Thursday.

Modi is also set to share the stage ⁠that day with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is visiting India as part of a broader bilateral trip.

Large banners promoting the summit, featuring Modi's portrait, have been hung along Delhi's main roads in the kind of public relations blitz for which the prime minister has ​become known.

India, ​which has yet to produce a globally dominant frontier AI model ​to rival those from the U.S. or China, ‌is betting that its competitive edge lies in large-scale deployment rather than development of foundational models.

India's Economic Survey, released last month, urged the government to focus on "application-led innovation" rather than chasing frontier-scale mega-models.

The strategy is backed by significant domestic adoption: with more than 72 million daily ChatGPT users by late 2025, India has already become OpenAI's largest user market.

But rapid AI adoption is also threatening jobs in India's $283 billion IT sector, with investment bank Jefferies predicting call centres could face a 50% revenue ‌hit from AI adoption by 2030.

AI CRICKET COACH, PRICEY HOTELS

Previous global AI ​summits, at Bletchley Park in the UK in 2023, Seoul in 2024 and ​Paris in 2025, were dominated by safety commitments, ​voluntary corporate pledges and governance declarations, though critics said they produced few enforceable outcomes.

More than 250,000 visitors ‌are expected at the India summit, with more ​than 300 exhibitors across a 70,000-square-metre ​expo held at Bharat Mandapam, a $300 million mega convention complex.

The influx of thousands of international delegates has sent Delhi's luxury hotel prices skyrocketing, stoking surprise on social media. A suite at the Taj Palace that normally costs ​about $2,200 per night was listed last week at ‌more than $33,000.

India's Supreme Court issued a circular on Saturday saying advocates could appear via video conferencing during ​the summit week, citing anticipated traffic congestion around the court in connection with the event.

China's humanoid robots ready for Lunar New Year showtime

BEIJING, Feb 16 (Reuters) - China's most-watched TV show, the annual CCTV Spring Festival gala, will be viewed later on Monday as a showcase for the country's cutting-edge industrial policy and Beijing's push to dominate humanoid robots and the future of manufacturing.

Four ‌rising humanoid robot startups - Unitree Robotics, Galbot, Noetix and MagicLab - are set to showcase their products in the gala, a televised event ‌and touchstone for China comparable to the Super Bowl for the United States.

The hype surrounding China's humanoid robot sector comes as major players including AgiBot and Unitree prepare for initial ​public offerings this year and domesticartificial intelligencestartups release a raft of frontier models during the lucrative nine-day Lunar New Year public holiday.

Last year's gala stunned viewers with 16 full-size Unitree humanoids twirling handkerchiefs and dancing in unison with human performers.

Unitree's founder met President Xi Jinping weeks later at a high-profile tech symposium - the first of its kind since 2018.

Xi has met five robotics startup founders in the past year, comparable to the four electric vehicle and ‌four semiconductor entrepreneurs he met in the same ⁠timeframe, giving the nascent sector unusual visibility.

The CCTV show, which drew 79% of live TV viewership in China last year, has for decades been used to highlight Beijing's tech ambitions including its space programme, drones and robotics, said ⁠Georg Stieler, Asia managing director and head of robotics and automation at technology consultancy Stieler.

"What distinguishes the gala from comparable events elsewhere is the directness of the pipeline from industrial policy to prime-time spectacle," Stieler said.

"Companies that appear on the gala stage receive tangible rewards in government orders, investor attention, and market access."

CHINA'S STRENGTHS

Behind ​the ​spectacle of robots running marathons and executing kung-fu kicks and backflips, China has positioned ​robotics and AI at the heart of its next-generation ‌AI+ manufacturing strategy, betting that productivity gains from automation will offset pressures from its ageing workforce.

"Humanoids bundle a lot of China's strengths into one narrative: AI capability, hardware supply chain, and manufacturing ambition. They are also the most 'legible' form factor for the public and officials," said Beijing-based tech analyst Poe Zhao.

"In an early market, attention becomes a resource."

China accounted for 90% of the roughly 13,000 humanoid robots shipped globally last year, far ahead of U.S. rivals includingTesla's Optimus, according to research firm Omdia. Morgan Stanley projects that China's humanoid sales will more than double to 28,000 units this ‌year.

Elon Musk has said he expects his biggest competitor to be Chinese companies as ​he pivots Tesla toward a focus on embedded AI and Optimus. "People outside China underestimate ​China, but China is an ass-kicker next level," he said last ​month.

So far, the real-world rollout has been limited to demonstration projects, often with support. Galbot, for example, has a ‌contract to use its humanoid robots in factories run by ​battery giant CATL, one of its ​major investors. UBTech won a government contract last year to send humanoid robots to work in logistics and support roles at a border crossing with Vietnam.

Chinese startups are also rapidly iterating AI models to train humanoid "brains", using real-world data collection to improve their environmental perception ​and understanding of natural language commands.

Analysts will watch ‌Monday's performance for innovations including multi-robot coordination, fault recovery and hand-related tasks like fine-object manipulation.

"A robot doing a backflip is still ​far more spectacular than one carefully gripping a plastic cup of water — even though the latter is technically much more demanding," ​Stieler said.

FBI confirms DNA recovered from glove found near Nancy Guthrie's home

TUCSON, Arizona, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Investigators have obtained a DNA sample from a discarded glove that was found near Nancy Guthrie's Arizona home and appears to match the pair worn by a masked prowler seen ‌in video footage caught by her doorbell camera before she was abducted two weeks ago, the FBI said on Sunday.

The preliminary ‌findings from a private crime laboratory in Florida were received by the FBI on Saturday and were awaiting "quality control and official confirmation" on Sunday before investigators run the results ​through a national database of known DNA profiles, the FBI said in a statement.

The process typically takes 24 hours from when the Federal Bureau of Investigation receives a DNA sample.

The glove was one roughly 16 collected by investigators in recent days in a search zone within two miles of the Tucson-area residence of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of U.S. television journalist Savannah Guthrie.

Most of the gloves collected by investigators for examination turned out to ‌have been dropped on the ground by searchers in ⁠the vicinity, the FBI said.

But the one with a DNA profile recovered from it is "different and appears to match the gloves" worn by the man in a ski mask seen trying to disable Guthrie's door camera in ⁠the early morning hours shortly before she was abducted, according to the FBI statement.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said on Friday that he was certain that the man in the video, who was also wearing a gun in a holster and an over-stuffed backpack, was the primary suspect investigators were looking for ​to solve ​the high-profile case.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on January 31 when family dropped ​her off at her home near Tucson after she ‌had dined with them, and relatives reported her missing the following day, authorities have said.

Nanos has said the elder Guthrie was extremely limited in her physical mobility and could not have left her home unassisted, leading investigators to conclude early on that she had been taken against her will.

At least two purported ransom notes have surfaced since she vanished, both of them delivered initially to news media outlets.

Traces of blood found on her front porch were confirmed by DNA tests to have come from Guthrie, officials said last week. Law enforcement and family members have described ‌her as being in frail health and in need of daily medication to survive. ​She also had a pacemaker.

The sheriff said on Friday that DNA from people other ​than Guthrie or those known to have been in close ​contact with her had also been collected from her property, but there has been no official word on any ‌further findings from those samples.

Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of the popular ​NBC News morning show "Today," has posted ​several video messages with her brother Camron Guthrie and sister Annie Guthrie pleading for their mother's return and appealing for the public's help in solving the case. In one video, they expressed a willingness to meet ransom demands.

Nanos told Reuters on Friday that ​no proof of life has surfaced since the abduction ‌but he was quick to add: "There's not been any proof of death either."

The presumed kidnapping has drawn intense media attention ​as well as expressions of sympathy and support from President Donald Trump.
