The Oscar and Tony winner "was super complimentary of the play and bonded with the cast over their shared love for director Danya Taymor," a source tells PEOPLE

Jolie won a Tony Award in 2024 for producing the Best Musical-winning production The Outsiders

Angelina Jolie is back on Broadway.

The director-actress, 50, attended a performance of John Proctor Is the Villain in New York City and took photos with the cast. The production shared photos to Instagram Monday, Aug. 25 and wrote in a caption, "a dream having the one and only angelina jolie join us at JOHN PROCTOR IS THE VILLAIN."

"Angelina was super complimentary of the play and bonded with the cast over their shared love for director Danya Taymor," a source close to the production tells PEOPLE of Jolie's visit.

Taymor, who directed John Proctor Is the Villain, previously directed the musical The Outsiders, on which Jolie was a producer when it debuted on Broadway last year.

Taymor won Best Direction of a Musical at the 2024 Tonys, while Jolie won a Tony Award as a producer under the musical's Best Musical award win. (The Outsiders won four Tonys in total.)

John Proctor Is the Villain is a modern retelling of Arthur Miller's classic The Crucible, which dramatizes the story of the 17th century Salem witch trials. The production received seven nominations at the Tony Awards in June, including for Best Play and Sadie Sink for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.

Jolie worked on The Outsiders as a producer alongside her daughter Vivienne, now 17, who worked on the musical as a volunteer assistant.

"Viv is a young artist who focuses her efforts on her support of others. She saw an early workshop a few times and then invited me to it," Jolie told PEOPLE in April 2024 ahead of the musical's opening.

"She has been there to assist in any way she can and has learned so much from [score and co-book writer] Justin Levine and the whole creative team," Jolie added at the time.

John Proctor Is the Villain runs on Broadway through Sept. 7. For audiences who don't get a chance to see the production before it leaves Broadway, Universal Studios announced in July that it will adapt the play into a film produced by Tina Fey and Marc Platt, per The Hollywood Reporter. Sink, 23, is an executive producer on the project.

Jolie most recently appeared on the big screen in the 2024 biopic Maria. She has a number of movies in the works, including a film titled Couture, which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
