A native of Queens who grew up on Long Island, Altieri spent 35 years at CBS, rising through the ranks of its program practices department. She joined the Tiffany network in 1969 in New York as an executive assistant during the heady days when CBS leaders William Paley and Frank Stanton were among the most powerful forces in media.
Altieri was promoted to editor in 1974 and to senior editor in 1977. She moved to Los Angeles in 1982 and was promoted to VP of program practices in 1984. Altieri retired as senior VP in 2005.
Altieri was known for her even hand in dealing with producers and the competing pressures of her job. She was respected for understanding the creative concerns of writers and producers while also serving as CBS' "ethical compass," as the company described. Altieri represented the network in legislative settings and with special interest groups and industry task forces. In later years, she wrote for UCLA's Anderson School of Business publications and served as a lecturer on business ethics and practices.
In a 1999 story on the changing nature of TV standards and practices departments, Altieri told Variety: "Standards are like a constitution. They can be interpreted strictly or loosely depending on what society's telling us. If we're going to stay vital and alive, we can't be too strict."
Altieri's family requests that contributions be made in her name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to Wounded Warriors Project.
