Marc Maron cleared the air regarding his feud with Jon Stewart during an interview with Esquire on Oct. 16

Maron explained that the tension began in the beginning stages of their careers, when he was "insecure" and "jealous" of Stewart's success

Years later, Maron said he invited Stewart onto his WTF podcast, but he claims The Daily Show host declined the offer

Marc Maron is taking responsibility for his longtime feud with Jon Stewart.

The WTF podcast host, 62, opened up about the rocky relationship with his fellow comedian in a new interview with Esquire's editor-in-chief Michael Sebastian. Calling the feud "petty," Maron admitted that it was "fully fueled by insecurity" on his part.

"Jon never did anything to me," Maron said. "I was just jealous."

"When I was coming up, he was this smart, cute Jewish guy," he added, explaining that The Daily Show host, also 62, fit into a particular category of people who "have foresight and are disciplined careerists and they know how to understand their talent, harness it and then figure out how to capitalize on it with their skill set on their terms."

Maron noted that he "never had any control over my talent" as a young person in the industry, which led him to resent Stewart's rapid success — Maron took over Stewart's hosting gig on the Comedy Central show Short Attention Span Theater in the 1990s, but it was canceled shortly after.

"I was just all in and just, like, demanding a place in the world of comedy," the Stick actor reflected. "So throughout my early career, Jon, he was roughly my age, was just everywhere. It never stopped, you know? I remember when he did the MTV show and then he had the talk show and he had me on, but my envy of him was always so — I would just s--- on him, and to his face, like, 'Who the f--- do you think you are?' "

"It was just consuming because I couldn't get through a week without him being on the cover of a magazine," he continues. "And for some reason, I saw him as like, 'If I could only have my s--- together I could be more like that guy.' "

At the time, Maron said he was constantly comparing himself to Stewart and wishing he was in better standing within the industry. Looking back, however, he shared that wasn't even what he truly wanted.

"I was definitely gunning for something else," Maron said. "I don't think I got into comedy to be an entertainer or have a job as a talk show host or anything."

"What did you get into it for then?" Sebastian interjected, to which Maron replied: "To hold space and to speak my mind. But I loved comedy, so I thought, 'I can do that in comedy.' I saw it as sort of a noble undertaking. The only rules of comedy, the only context is, you should be funny. But outside of that, you can f------ do whatever you want really on that stage. You get the range."

Maron went on to say that he had a strong belief that staying true to himself would take him far, but it frustrated him that Stewart seemed to effortlessly embody that.

"I was annoying to him," Maron acknowledged. "Eventually he was like, 'I don't need to take this s--- from you and f--- Maron.' But I get it."

When asked if he ever tried to have his Stewart on his podcast, which came to an end on Monday, Oct. 13, Maron claimed he invited Stewart "early on," but the Emmy-winner declined.

"I remember I was in Portland, Oregon, and I was like, 'Yeah, I do this podcasting and I'm kind of apologizing. I'm kind of making up with people and you know, you and I have had this thing for a while,' " Maron recalled. He claimed Stewart said, " 'Well, yeah, I just, you know, there's no love here.' And I'm like, 'Okay.' "

Maron continued, "And then he basically said, 'Yeah, I might be willing to have coffee or something, but yeah, I'm not doing that with you.' And then he said, 'I'm sure what you're doing is very creative. Good luck with it.' Just the stinging condescension of that was like, it didn't help anything. And now he's doing a podcast, so, full circle."
