One man's haircut is causing quite the stir on social media
Amy Gong Maxwell, 34, posted her husband, Dan Maxwell, 41, chopping off his hair in June, and the video has since been viewed more than a million times
"Who knew short vs. long hair was so controversial?" Amy tells PEOPLE
A man is going viral for his "buzz cut summer" glow-up after his wife filmed him chopping his locks.
"Buzz cut summer, from hippie Jesus to Fight Club Brad Pitt," Amy Gong Maxwell, 34, captioned a June TikTok of her husband, 41-year-old Dan Maxwell's transformation. The video has since gained more than 100,000 likes on the social media platform.
Amy tells PEOPLE exclusively that Dan started growing his hair out in his 30s, and it was her first time seeing him with hair that short since they matched on Hinge three summers ago.
"He had short hair in his dating profile and I thought he was cute so I reached out to him. I realized his pictures were old when I met him on our first date," Amy tells PEOPLE of their early days.
"I remember waiting in line, thinking he catfished me! He was completely different than what I thought he would be. I had never dated a guy with really long hair before, but he was nice and, to be honest, a little too cute. It took me a few dates to get used to his hair," she says.
The viral video begins with Dan standing in the doorway of their Los Angeles home with deep blonde, shoulder-length hair.
He plays in it a bit as Amy films his last moments with that length.
Next he's seen sitting in "the coolest barbershop" chair as a barber uses clippers to give him that Brad Pitt-Fight Club special playfully referenced in her caption.
"Where is my husband?" she wrote over the video of the finished result, adding, "I don't recognize him!"
As evident in her comment section, Amy tells PEOPLE the reviews for his results have been mixed.
"With long hair, Dan gets a lot of compliments and attention. When we go out for dinner, Dan gets catcalled by people! With short hair, he doesn't get as much overt attention," she says.
"Idc what anyone else says that's a glow up," one person wrote. Another added, "So sorry but he's our husband now."
Others weren't so sold, like one user who commented, "Not the state trooper makeover."

Instead of Brad Pitt, another likened Dan to "Charlie Swan," Billy Burke's fictional character who played the father of Kristen Stewart's Bella Swan in the Twilight franchise.
"It was surprising to see thousands of women commenting and debating Dan's looks. Who knew short vs. long hair was so controversial?" Amy tells PEOPLE of the reactions.
"Some people hated the cut and said he looked like a cop or military man. Others obsessed over the new cut and shared that the long hair made him look like a boy who didn't have a job. It seemed like the comments were divided in an almost political way, conservative vs. liberal, clean-cut vs. free spirited. Dan is truly a chameleon because everyone sees a different person in him," she adds.
