Beaches across US close during Labor Day weekend due to fecal contamination

SAN DIEGO —Thousands of people across the United States are being advised against water-related activities at beaches and other coastal areas during the Labor Day holiday weekend due to unsafe levels of bacteria.

Swimming caution advisories and closures have been issued for numerous beaches along the East Coast — from Maine to Florida — because of water quality concerns caused by elevated levels of fecal contamination. The advisories warn beachgoers to avoid water contact due to potential illness risk from bacteria.

Meanwhile, authorities on the West Coast also warned of high bacteria levels at beaches, including in San Diego, where part of the Imperial Beach shoreline, Silver Strand shoreline, and Coronado were closed as of Aug. 31, according to San Diego Beach Water Quality.

At the start of Labor Day weekend, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued an ocean water use warning on Aug. 29 for local beaches due to bacterial levels exceeding health standards. The warnings were issued for parts of Topanga County Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, and Santa Monica, among others.

In Michigan, several beaches were either closed or under bacteria advisories, the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. State officials said some beaches weren't safe for swimming due to potential wildlife contamination.

Consumption of or contact with water contaminated with feces of humans and other warm-blooded animals can cause a variety of illnesses, such as gastrointestinal illness, skin rashes, respiratory illness, and other types of infections, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Environmental Protection Agency said the most commonly tested fecal bacteria indicators are E. coli and enterococci bacteria, among others. The bacteria can come from sewage discharges, failing septic systems, storm water runoff, and animal and agricultural waste, according to the New York State Department of Health.

Hundreds of beaches had 'potentially unsafe contamination levels' in 2024

Beaches are a popular destination during the summer months and holidays, such as Independence Day and Labor Day. But closures due to high levels of bacteria and fecal contamination remain a widespread issue across the nation.

Earlier this summer, high bacteria levels prompted beach closures and advisories from Michigan to New York as beachgoers prepared for Independence Day celebrations. According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, beach closures from unsafe bacteria levels "tend to peak in July because it's hot and more people are there."

A report from conservation group Environment America, released in July 2025, noted that 61% of U.S. beaches had "potentially unsafe contamination levels" in 2024. During that year, the group found that 1,930 out of 3,187 tested beaches nationwide experienced at least one day in which indicators of fecal contamination reached potentially unsafe levels.

The group also discovered that more than 450 beaches had potentially unsafe levels of fecal contamination for at least 25% of the days tested. The report added that there were over 7,563 health warnings or closures at coastal and Great Lakes beaches in 2024, impacting one out of every 15 swimming days.

"Each year, there are an estimated 57 million cases of illness in the U.S. resulting from swimming in oceans, lakes, rivers, and ponds. The vast majority of these illnesses go unreported," the report states. "Contaminated water can also trigger health warnings or closures that interfere with our ability to enjoy the beach."

What are beach advisories, closures?

Beach advisories and closures occur when water quality tests show the presence of one or more contaminants that exceed healthy standards, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Ocean Service. Beachgoers are advised to follow state and local guidelines for advisories and to find information on a beach's current water quality.

Beach closures and advisories can be caused by excessive rainwater that carries pollution from storm drains to recreational waters, the National Ocean Service says. Pollutions include motor oil, animal waste, pesticides, trash, and pathogens.

Other sources that lead to beach closures and advisories are harmful algal blooms — such as red tides —— sewage, and chemical spills, according to the National Ocean Service. The USA TODAY Network - New England reported on Aug. 29 that more than 20 beaches in Vermont were under bacteria advisories due to high cyanobacteria levels heading into Labor Day weekend.

According to the Vermont Department of Health, cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae that grow in freshwater, can release toxins into the water that create unsafe swimming conditions. Health effects from coming in contact with cyanobacteria include rashes, abdominal pain, vomiting, liver damage, and dizziness.

"It is generally wise to avoid swimming after heavy rains or if the water is an unusual color without first checking with local or state health authorities," the National Ocean Service advises.

A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found dead lying in a pool of blood at the Burning Man festival on Saturday.

A festival attendee alerted authorities to the man around 9:15 p.m. local time Saturday, about the same time the giant "Man" effigy in the middle of the venue was starting to burn — the event, held on the second-to-last night of the gathering, which gives the annual arts and music festival its name.

When Pershing County Sheriff's Office deputies found the man, he was "obviously deceased," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The sheriff's office said the victim, described as a White man, had not yet been identified, and his body was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office.

The sheriff's office did not provide any information on a possible cause of death or suspects.

"Although this act appears to be a singular crime, all participants should always be vigilant of their surroundings and acquaintances," the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office noted the Washoe County Sheriff's Office was also on hand to assist in the investigation and said there would be a "heavy law enforcement presence until the scene can be released." The festival is set to conclude Monday.

The Pershing County Sheriff's office said it would be a "complicated investigation of a crime in a city which will be gone by the middle of the week."

Burning Man has been held in Nevada's Black Rock Desert annually since 1990, where tens of thousands of people gather for the week prior to Labor Day to create the temporary Black Rock City.

The Black Rock Desert is a dried lake bed in a remote area of northwestern Nevada, about 150 miles from Reno.

In 2023, one person died amid heavy rain that caused severe flooding during the event. Over 70,000 people were stranded for several days as the festival's operations were halted and roads into and out of the event area were closed.

SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea has suspended a military radio broadcast that transmits to North Korea as part of measures aimed at easing tensions with Pyongyang, Seoul's defence ministry said on Monday.

It is the first time that South Korea has stopped the radio broadcast in 15 years since they resumed after North Korea's sinking of a South Korean warship, according to media reports.

The radio broadcast, called "Voice of Freedom", carries items such as news on the North's regime, South Korean economic development or K-pop culture. It has been used as one of South Korea's tools for psychological warfare against the North.

"The Ministry of National Defence has suspended broadcasts of Voice of Freedom as part of measures to ease military tensions between the South and North," Lee Kyung-ho, deputy spokesperson at the ministry, told a press briefing.

The two Koreas remain technically at war since the 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Shortly after he took office in June, the administration of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung switched off propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts on the border criticising the North's regime as it looks to revive stalled dialogue with its neighbour.

Lee has vowed to take further steps to dial down tensions with North Korea and proposed a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to build peace.

But so far North Korea has rebuffed Lee's overtures and said it is not interested in dialogue with South Korea.

The North Korean leader plans to visit China this week, its major ally and economic lifeline, to attend a military parade, along with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Drake Baldwin broke a ninth-inning tie with a two-run homer and the Atlanta Braves avoided a four-game sweep with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday night.

Braves rookie Hurston Waldrep pitched 5 2/3 strong innings. Jake Fraley came off the bench in the seventh and went 2 for 2. Michael Harris II also had two hits for Atlanta.

Brandon Marsh homered for the Phillies, who lead the NL East by six games over the New York Mets heading into September.

Matt Olson tied it at 1 with an RBI groundout for the Braves in the eighth.

Fraley started the ninth with an infield single off José Alvarado (4-2) and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Vidal Bruján struck out, but Baldwin drove Alvarado's first pitch, a 98 mph sinker, over the wall in left field.

Baldwin walked as a pinch hitter in the eighth and remained in the game at catcher.

Tyler Kinley (4-3) tossed a perfect eighth and Raisel Iglesias struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 23rd save in 28 chances.

Waldrep continued to impress, giving up one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. After starting two games in 2024, the 23-year-old right-hander, the No. 24 overall draft pick in 2023, was called up to the Braves on Aug. 2 and has a 1.01 ERA in six outings, including five starts.

Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Key moment

Alvarado could have gotten the first out in the ninth but couldn't field Fraley's grounder just to the side of the pitcher's mound. Phillies shortstop Trea Turner fielded the slow grounder but didn't have enough time to get Fraley.

Key stat

Waldrep has allowed four earned runs over 35 2/3 innings in August. He has struck out 33 batters.

Up next

Braves: Open a three-game set at the Chicago Cubs on Monday afternoon. Atlanta RHP Spencer Strider (5-12, 4.95 ERA) faces Chicago RHP Colin Rea (10-6, 4.23).

Phillies: Begin a three-game series at Milwaukee on Monday afternoon. Phillies RHP Taijuan Walker (4-7, 3.63 ERA) opposes Brewers RHP Jacob Misiorowski (4-2, 4.33).
